Artist Statement

‘Interpretation is often difficult in dance, since movements, unlike words, have few combinatory rules that guarantee a clear, unambiguous communication of ideas. Dance is unlike verbal language, for it usually credits meaning only vaguely.’

(Sally Banes 1995, p. 28)

Through the use of per-formative film and prints I examine and recognize abstract dance movements as intentional actions with emotionally expressive content.

The focus of the dance is the detached form (The hand) and the dynamics of the isolated movements. The film-loop used is a sequence of choreographed gestural hand movements portrayed as dances as opposed to ordinary everyday actions.

Using dancers such as Yvonne Rainer, Mary Wigman and Loie Fuller as inspiration I use repetition, symmetry and exaggerated movements to create unusual visuals that can be found in the abstract modernist performances. The simplistic nature of the work is to enhance the striking and expressive nature of the gestures, creating an alluring spectacle from isolated movements.
