Artist Statement

My art practice explores the study of painting, where I have established an intricate form of processes with my methods of mediums and materials to create and formulate chance aspects within my painting. My methods are to paint with a non-standard formulation of processes, whereupon I paint using oversized paintbrushes; black silk emulsion, masking tape and found wrapping paper.

The process has developed from joining and wrapping paper together with masking tape to form a large-scale square paper area 12 ft. x 10 ft., where I painted repeatedly over the joins in the paper to create risen folds in the paper. When I began this process I became captivated by the paint, it was to me a transilusianary moment of Chance. The paint would seep and perpetrate the folds almost like the healing of wounds. I would time the painting process before the next application of paint. I then covered the complete area of the paper with another 3 coats of paint timing each layer. I painted both sides of the paper creating a two-sided painting.

My intention is now to exhibit these paintings in the view of creating an experience though physical engagement with the audience. The notion of the audience engagement in my art practice brings me to realise that the painting objects themselves have when suspended and hung together form a dwelling that the audience can contemplate and experience, a ‘moment of Chance’.
