Artist Statement

How often have you taken the time to admire and analyse the aesthetics of surfaces surrounding you?

My practice inspects the surfaces of animals, focusing especially on the minute details that can go amiss. The familiar skins depicted in the exhibition loses its originality by the use of magnification, creating an appearance of abstraction and ambiguity. This directs the audience’s attention to the finest of details, appreciating the overall perspective as much as the aesthetical facets of the surfaces. The experimentation of various materials and use of scale has assisted the confrontation and persuasion for the audience to take notice.

Aesthetics surround our society and we as animals have a phenomenal and aesthetical function that is also a beauty within itself. We as a society have a tendency to observe in a broader perspective and not scrutinise the smallest of information that is part of the bigger picture. Perhaps once we manage to appreciate the delicate appearances and purposes of the exteriors, we may be able to acknowledge the surfaces’ aesthetical qualities overall.
