Artist Statement

My current work follows from an investigation into the movement Arte Povera.

Following from some of the points discovered in the Arte Povera ethos the main aim was to create works of art from materials that could be sourced locally to where the work would be exhibited, in this instance the Caldewgate Campus site at the University of Cumbria.

A series of sculptures have been created by taking simple materials which would usually be overlooked, taken for granted or discarded to create sculptural forms. Materials such as cardboard, paper and steel have been transformed into flimsy strips, which have then been utilized to make sculptural, playful forms using the crafting technique of weaving by which these flimsy materials are given strength and rigidity in their new found fine art form.

The strength and rigidity varies throughout the series of works and can be seen to do so in some of the pieces from the sculptural forms been organised and tightly knit, but then descending into chaos as the weave gets more widespread through the piece. Some of the works in the series also invite the viewer to engage with the work be by sight or touch as well as the viewer being encouraged to follow the work through space.
