Artist Statement

My frequent visits and walks in Cumbria and Northumbria are the inspiration behind my artwork. Repeated visits to these special places and Lindisfarne, Holy Island, made me question why I pursue these personal pilgrimages and what was the significance for me building stone towers at each visit; my own offering, a religious ritual if you like. Every culture around the world has built stone towers (or stone piles) with a significant meaning, unknown to me I was reviving a ritualistic act that has occurred throughout history. Reliving history and repeating memories of the past combined with the importance of un-hewn stones in religions and cultures all play and important part in my art.

I used photography to document the building of stone towers at my special places and created a series of artworks from these. My repetitive prints represent the ritual, the repeated act, the importance of place and location and of history repeating itself. Presenting my work as a scroll and as a stained glass window further embeds this 'religious' ritual, representing its cross-cultural significance.

My work asks the viewer to question their own ritualistic acts, their purpose and why repetition holds such importance.
